Camping Information

There are lots of different ways to go camping, the differences being a tradeoff between comfort and solitude.  RV and car camping, or base camping offer the most comfort, while backpacking offers the most solitude. And then there’s walk-in tent camping which is somewhere in between.

If you’re base camping you can bring along absolutely everything you need to enjoy the outdoors on mostly your own terms: screen tents and sun canopies, ice-chests full of food, folding cots, and camping tables and chairs.

If you’re backpacking you have to keep things light. In the old days that meant doing without, but these days there is lots of ultralight backpacking and multi-function gear available to make it easier to find the solitude you’re looking for. There are internal frame backpacks, ultra-lightweight tents and bivies, sleeping bags, backpacking stoves and dehydrated food to comfortable in the back country.

Most walk-in tent camping sites are not that far from the parking lot, making your camping trip easier than backpacking, but not as easy as car camping. Since they’re set away from the main campground they’re considerably more private. You’re going to want you’re gear to be a little lighter than car camping, but it’s not as crucial as it is with backpacking because you don’t have that far to carry it.

Practice Good Stewardship of our Public Lands:

You can help to take good care of our public lands so that others may enjoy these areas for years to come by practicing some of the following actions:

Don't Litter... take along a trash bag or other receptacle for collecting your trash so that you can deposit it in the proper trash receptacle.

Make sure that you are using the correct type of camping equipment permitted in that area. Check with your destination ahead of time for seasonal fire or campstove restrictions that may be in place.

Don't camp in areas where you are not permitted. These areas have been declared "off limits" to campers to protect wildlife, vegetation, or for your safety.
